Crowns are a type of dental restoration that fully cover the entire portion of the tooth that lies at and above the gum line. In comparison, dental fillings are restorations that fill in or cover over just a portion of the tooth. Since crowns encase the entire visible part of a tooth, a dental crown in effect becomes the tooth's new outer surface.

If Dr. Chen recommends a crown for you, it is probably due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • To restore a tooth to its original form and function. This is usually the case with large portions of teeth lost to decay or fracture.
  • To strengthen a tooth compromised by the loss of tooth structure or loss of structural integrity.  This is usually the case after a tooth has undergone fracture or root canal treatment.
  • To improve the function of a tooth with neighboring teeth.
  • To improve the cosmetic appearance of a tooth by allowing the size, shape, and shade of the tooth and/or teeth to be changed.

Crowns can be made out of different types of materials that you and Dr. Chen will choose for your individual situation.  Some materials enhance the esthetic aspect of crowns and look exactly like natural teeth.  Other materials emphasize longevity and are extremely durable.
