Gold fillings and crowns have been used reliably for over one hundred years.  The high strength and malleable (moldable) properties of gold allow for a long lasting restoration that is extremely functional.  Gold inlays/onlays are more conservative in that less tooth structure must be removed for the restoration to have the proper strength to withstand heavy chewing forces.  For large restorations, the materials of choice are gold and porcelain.
