This material is a glass like material that is extremely durable when bonded to teeth.  Today, there are many types of porcelain that can be used to withstand the strong chewing forces that the back teeth must withstand.  With this advantage, Porcelain fillings (which are also called inlays and onlays) can be used on back teeth in cases where other materials may not be as effective.

In addition to the high strength and durability of porcelain inlays/onlays, they are extremely esthetic due to the glass like properties of ceramic.  Different shades can be used to match the remaining tooth and the transluscent property of porcelain allows the filling to reflect the absorption and reflection of light very similarly to natural teeth.  This results in a filling that very effectively replaces large amounts of lost tooth structure.
