The most common procedure in oral surgery is extraction (or removal) of teeth. If a tooth or supporting bone has been damaged by decay, periodontal disease or a tooth fracture, we may try to repair it and restore it with a filling, crown and/or root canal. Sometimes, though, the damage is too extensive for the tooth to be repaired. This is the most common reason for extracting a tooth. Here are some other possible reasons for tooth extraction.
