Peridontal Scaling and Root Planing, commonly called a "Deep Cleaning" is a conservative (non-surgical) approach to periodontal therapy.  Scaling and Root Planing is most often the initial treatment for periodontal disease.  The purposes of scaling and root planing are:

  • To remove hard deposits and infection from beneath the gum
  • Clean the root surfaces
  • Smooth the root surfaces

Deposits that cause periodontal disease (bacterial plaque, tartar (calculus), food debris, and pus) are removed from the infected periodontal pocket.  When the causes of infection are removed, the gum tissues are allowed to heal and become healthy.  Non-surgical treatment is usually a very effective treatment that allows the affected tissues to heal.  This is effective in the early stages of periodontal disease.

For many patients, scaling and root planing is the only treatment needed.  Sometimes, scaling and root planing may be combined with other forms of conservative therapy (such as antimicrobial therapy).  It can often eliminate the inflammation and infection that promotes the tissue destruction around teeth from periodontal disease. Most effective in treating mild to moderate cases of periodontal disease, this non-surgical approach is well-received among dental patients.

Unfortunately, scaling alone is not a cure for periodontal disease. It must be followed by an ongoing process of good dental hygiene and regular re-evaluation to maintain healthy gums.
